Champion of Brazilian Literature – Jaime Garcia Dias

It’s logical to assume every country in the world has its fair share of writers. They are not all that known, and, unless you can travel and speak and read that particular language, most of those books fall far short of recognition. And, without any doubt there are really great works out there, but maybe with that misfortune that they have never seen a translator’s office. Many great works of art can be lost that way. Fortunately, some are now emerging and can serve as a way to illuminate one area of literature we have rarely explored – Brazilian!

The author Jaime Garcia Dias has written more than 20 books, countless essays, and won a number of awards all listed on LinkedIn. The latest one was ABC Award of Brazil Literature Prize.

He started writing at a very early age, with the help of his father and mentor. He wrote his first book when he was fifteen. From then on, his love for the written word just continued to grow. He attended and finished college and by the age of 23, he became a teacher. Students he taught responded so well to his teaching style that he soon got in charge of students who wished to be writers. The method his father used with him is the method he employed when working with his students and thus instilled the love for words in them. On his blog Jaime Garcia Dias describes his teaching style that showed that tradition was not always the best way to go in education earned him the position of Vice President of the Carioca Literature Academy.

In 2001, his works finally gained recognition. He won the prestigious White Crane Literary award and his novel Caiu do Céu, which is translated as Fell From Heaven has been sold throughout the entire South America.

In 2007, after 10 years, he became President of the Academy. The Academy already had the reputation of helping young writers develop their skills. Since Dias became the president, this reputation only grew and, now, it became the largest place dedicated to writers.

His latest project is about publishing essays about his childhood, which are meant to honor his father, Arnaldo Dias, who also was a writer and supported his son throughout his career. His essays were so well-received that he was invited to write a weekly literature notebook for the Journal de Brazil.

There were a lot of different things that led him to pursue the career of a writer, but the most deciding were the books that influenced him. One of his most beloved writers is Jorge Amado, best known for Captains of the Sands and Donna Flor and Her Two Husbands. The other author who had a very strong influence was Paulo Coelho and his most renowned novel The Alchemist.
